Album Review

Kim Wilde's number one cover of the Supremes' "You Keep Me Hangin' On" gave her a number one hit back in 1987, but she gained chart life five years earlier with the glitzy bounce of "Kids in America," allied with the new decade's keyboard-laden pop sound and peaking at number 25 on Billboard's Top 40. The Singles Collection 1981-1993 is easily the most opportune avenue available to investigate the rest of Wilde's material. While video may have been her best friend throughout her career, sporting her attractive looks and modest Brit attitude, Wilde's music does contain some pleasing dance hooks and catchy melodies. "Another Step (Closer to You)" and "Love Is Holy" are bright and lively with typical yet congenial pop melodies, while "You Came" mixes a clean, keyboard-aided backdrop to Wilde's sheer vocal style. "Chequered Love" and "Water on Glass" aren't genius, but their arrant pop melodies and simplistic beats are anything but standstill. Even minor efforts like "Rage to Love" and "Never Trust a Stranger" find a way of hurdling clichéd '80s pop/rock fabrications so that they sound slightly fresh and breezy. Only the unbecoming "Cambodia" and the hollowed out "Child Come Away" should be avoided on this collection, as both lack the spirit that Wilde usually packs.

Where's "Kids in America"?

Sure wish you'd included "Kids in America." That was by far one of her all-time best.

ITUNES crontolling you what to buy

OOHHH yes you can find "Kids in America" but to get it you have to cough up 9.99 for a whole soundtrack that you dont even want to buy. So do a search for "Kids in America", and you will see the soundtrack that i was talking about; till this very point i was very happy with Itunes. but then i saw how you are forced into buying an album just to get one song.. i might as well go back to buying CDs at a local shop.. sad .. very sad

Where are the first seven tracks?

Kim Wilde's Singles Collection is good, too bad iTunes did not include the first 7 tracks, would have saved me from buying the CD. "Kids in America" is a really good song. Where is it?

The daughter of '50s British pop singer Marty Wilde, Kim Wilde had several pop hits during the '80s. Initially, her synth-driven pop fit in with the new wave movement, but as the decade progressed, it became clear that her strength was mainstream pop. In 1980, Kim Wilde signed with producer Mickie Most's Rak Records, releasing her first single, "Kids in America," early in 1981. "Kids in America" climbed to number two on the British charts that spring, while her second single, "Chequered Love," made...
