A listen like fine wine

Steve Bell is an artist thrice blessed. A true tenor whose phrasings are undeniably winsome, a guitarist of great skill who is at home in a variety of stylistic settings, and a lyricist with a poet’s eye and sensibility. All of these gifts are on full display throughout the superbly-crafted album that is “Kindness.”

“Cherish those sisters and brothers along the road,” he sings in the song, “Good Friend.” And so each of these songs are: friends for every season of life—seasons of joy to be sure, as in “About Love”—but seasons of sorrow as well—as in the song “Absalom, Absalom,” with its echoes of a father’s lament. Bell draws on all the colours of the palette, from the somber hues to the light, and faith is an ornament to this collection of songs. Fortunate those who take time to listen…

Canadian-born Christian folkie Steve Bell got his start in a family gospel band which toured behind his father, a Baptist minister who served as a prison chaplain in federal penitentiaries. After high school, he toured clubs in a series of little-known bands before joining the acclaimed Elias, Schritt & Bell; life on the road eventually triggered a crisis of faith, however, and in 1988 Bell was born again, retiring from performing to become a stay-at-home father.
