iTunes Review

Will Oldham's debut album under the name Palace Brothers began a peculiar odyssey into the worlds of old-school rustic Appalachia and indie rock. The recording is primitive, echoing the sounds found on Harry Smith's Anthology of American Folk Music. The playing is imperfect, sounding like a group of amateurs seated around the kitchen table, indifferent to the results, banjo notes wandering past unpolished harmonies. Oldham's love is for both old-time country melodies and old-time recorded sounds. He attempts to capture both with the haunted simplicity of "Long Before," "I Tried to Stay Healthy for You," and the gloriously ramshackle "O Lord Are You in Need?" The title cut breaks from much of the sound and concept of the album, adding a doomsday keyboard to the loose, endearing vocals. This music isn't meant for everyone. It's weird and idiosyncratic and sounds like it comes from a distant era. Oldham's voice breaks wherever it does. However, those willing to make the leap of faith should find much of it endearing.

Not my favorite break off but. .

Excellent album still. Tracks like Riding really fram the vibe that I get off of this record. If you like any of this in the lease bit, check out his other projects (none of which iTMS has) Like Palace, Palace Music. Boonnie Prince Billy is my favorite break off of this mans musical weirdness. He can do SO MUCH with a voice that is untrained, raw and very powerfull. Highly advised to pick this up especially if you like music with a twang.

glitch

This is an amazing album, unfortunately the first seven songs are from Days in the Wake and for some reason are mislabled here. The track names are right for There is No One.. but the actual tracks themselves are wrong. I reported the glitch to Itunes so hopefully they'll fix it.

There is no one what will take care of you

I agree with the guy who wants more Palace Brothers, or for that matter Will Oldham, Bonnie Prince Billie etc. I don't know if it is Will Oldhams choice or what not to be on i tunes but would love to buy more as I am a huge fan.

Biography

Formed: 1992 in Louisville, KY

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s

Known alternately as Palace, Palace Songs, and Palace Brothers, this outfit is the project of guitarist/vocalist Will Oldham. Palace Brothers takes the harsher side of country and folk and reworks it into devastatingly spare, intense indie rock. Oldham's voice whimpers and whines like a centegenarian, and the simplicity and effortlessness of the songs suggest that they...
