iTunes Review

Newsted is the solo endeavor of former Metallica bassist Jason Newsted. He wrote these songs on an iPad before fleshing them out with his power trio, which features drummer Jesus Mendez Jr. (formerly of The Napoleon Blownaparts) and guitarist Jessie Farnsworth. The opening “Soldierhead” was meant to be a tip of the hat to U.S. soldiers; in the lyrics Newsted also tries to fathom what it must be like for the young members of the American military to fight in a desert with bombs going off all around them and bullets whizzing by. Fans of early Metallica are sure to appreciate Newsted’s return to hard-driving speed metal. Parts of “Soldierhead” closely recall certain songs from Metallica’s fourth studio album, …And Justice for All, save for a more audible bass mix. Newsted warns against judging his character in the venomous lyrics to “Godsnake,” which plays a little longer and a little slower than “Soldierhead.” His prowess as a bassist surfaces in the punchy “King of the Underdogs” before “Skyscraper” closes with towering, Sabbathy sludge.

Better than anything Hetfield or Ulrich have done since Justice for All. Also sad that a bass player is a better singer than Hetfield has ever been in his life.

It's Good! with an exclamation Mark!

Just listen to it a few times on preview all, you won't be disappointed.

a surprise for sure

I really loved the Voivod albums Jason did with them and figured maybe he would carry some of that feel to his "solo" cd. overall it is not bad, I liked it more then I thought I would. Skyscraper is my favorite, Newsted has hints of Celtic Frost's Tom G Warrior and COC's Mike Dean in there, not as gruf but I can hear it, and the riff is very stoner rock like, probably why I dig it so much. Soldierhead is the other better track. all 4 are good, I hope he can keep it up on his follow up EPs.

Spearheaded by its namesake, former Metallica (and Voivod, Ozzy Osbourne, Flotsam and Jetsam, etc.) bassist Jason Newsted, Newsted is a heavy metal trio formed in 2012. Handling bass and vocals duties himself, Newsted recruited drummer Jesus Mendez, Jr., whom he met during his time with Metallica and EchoBrain, with guitarist Jessie Farnsworth to fill out his eponymous power trio. The band didn't waste any time, setting to work writing and recording later that year,...
