Editors’ Notes

Fans of Kaki King’s early recordings will be pleased to learn that with her sixth studio album, she's gone back to her all-instrumental style of percussive string music. But 2012’s Glow isn’t so much a return to form as a progression of her original style. Even when accompanied by such traditional instruments as bagpipes and a string quartet, the Atlanta-born/Brooklyn-based composer and guitar virtuoso pushes the boundaries of possibilities, starting with “Great Round Burn.” It’s an apt title for a song performed at the barn-burning pace of breakneck bluegrass yet trimmed with short, allocated bursts of playing; these somehow create a sweeping, panoramic soundscape overflowing with more dramatic tension than any human voice could create. Rather than going with standard studio reverb, King modifies a guitar with a shim of wood fastened on the 16th fret to create twin fifth notes on each side of the instrument’s neck. As heard on “Bowen Island,” the result sounds both exotically Eastern and otherworldly in its innovation. King contrasts spatial balance with busy swells in “The Fire Eater.”

Customer Reviews

Her guitar acoustics keeps getting better!

An astounding album. This time Kaki goes back to her old guitar soloing days. However, this is brought with a whole new level with a fresher sound. A new adventure with new ideas… sound slightly happier (or lighter) than any of her old albums… although there is still that dark side to it. Sounds as if she wanted to bring back some maturity into her music. Beware of the first piece on the album with the string quartet! It will blow your mind away with sweet candy! Her musical ideas as an artist and her guitar skills are still at its highest level. Well done!

Great new album for sure!

Epic acoustic instrumentals are what she's know for and this album truly delivers.... I will be playing this one over and over again for sure!

GLOW

Kaki King's Glow is stunning. It reveals itself in new ways with each listen, finding its own way to speak and ultimately connect depending on the time of day you're listening and the head space you bring to it. While her guitar playing is unquestionably brilliant from a technical standpoint, the true genius lies in King's songwriting and soundscapes. The compositions are at once cathartic and meditative, empowering and celestial. I can't see how Glow doesn't wind up being hailed as one of the great recordings of 2013.

Biography

Born: August 24, 1979 in Marietta, GA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Kaki King's childhood passions were the drums and Brit-pop, and she figured if she ever made it big it would be because of her skills behind the kit. However, her musical talents didn't stop there: she also played the guitar, and though she learned Beatles and Fleetwood Mac songbooks, she found herself drawn to the styles of Preston Reed and Michael Hedges. Moving from Atlanta to New York to attend college, King got her first taste of solo guitar performance thanks to campus open-mike nights, and...
