the joy of music

This is truly the best of classic american folk music. The music is so vivid that you can smell the coal burning, the music puts you in the very core of turn of the century america, its a spiritual journey through the hills of virginia, to fields of the deep south into the heartland of america. This is a musical treasure found.

Songs to Delight the Neighbors

These songs are like a walk in the wilderness on a beautiful day. After listening to these people singing into a hand held microphone, I wonder if the promoters and marketers of music are developers who see opportunity instead of beauty on a nature hike. When asked where she learned the song, one woman answers, "I made it up." I gave this collection to a very good song writing friend, and she said that she couldn't get it out of her CD player long enough to play anything else.

interesting choices

This is an interesting representation of the field recordings -- I appreciate that they selected collections that are perhaps less well-known than Jelly Roll Morton's or Muddy Waters'.
