Charley Pride's significance in the history of country music isn't entirely tied to the quality of his music, although his warm baritone and adherence to "tradition" certainly provided the listening public with a wealth of enjoyable music. But his immense popularity with what is often assumed to be a conservative (read racially-intolerant) country audience in spite of (or because of) his skin color, will provide country music scholars with points to ponder for years to come. Beyond the curious phenomenon, though, is the music, which is often simply great. "Kiss an Angel Good Mornin'" and "Is Anybody Goin' to San Antone" are enduring classics, and his live version of Hank Williams' "Kaw-Liga" demonstrates the rural charm that helped make Pride a star. This 20-song collection is a good distillation of hits from the late '60s through the late '70s, including the aforementioned tracks as well as a number of other hits. Charley Pride had too long and too successful a career to sum up with a single disc, but until he is granted his deserved and overdue box set, The Essential Charley Pride will do.
Itunes album review is offensive
This is a good album, I have purchased a few songs from it. My problem is with the Itunes review at the top of the page. So if I am conservative, then I'm automatically racially intolerant? Hey itunes...maybe you should review your tips for writing a review. Keep your personal views to yourself and do what your best at...charging my credit card.
cannot beleive the idiot who wrote the bio on charley pride...talk about an racist...but back to charley...great memoris of my uncle singing these songs while driving around southwestern pa in the seventies...never one mention about race until this idiot brought it up...never the less one of the GREATS in country music
Agree with sheepdog
I've listened to Charley Pride since childhood, along with every other star of his era. There wasn't a single time, EVER, that my parents made any reference to his race. We were a hard-core country-music family, and it's all I knew until middle school. This review diminished him and his significant talent to "he made it despite..." A terrible disservice to a wonderful artist, AND his fans.
That said, I love all these songs, but where's "Promises"??
