Artists Change

Get over it, either come along for the beautiful ride or don't, but stop complaining. Evolution is natural and I think this album sounds amazing. Lost his way? Meandering hard to comprehend? If you've listened to the whole Iron and Wine catalog, it's easy to see how it's progressed to this point. Funny how most "artists" are the first to fault someone else for their lack of vision. Imagine how impossible it would be to create anything if you had to please all your fans all the time.

Sam has lost his way ...

I understand that artists change and grow -- I'm a writer.
But when you so far remove yourself from what makes you great that your "new" work bears no resemblance to that which was most beautiful, you are no longer growing. You're lost.
Iron & Wine's newest is a sad departure from what's beautiful into meandering, hard-to-comprehend music. "Our Endless Numbered Days" was soulful and had personality. This album doesn't know what it wants to be. The sounds -- brass, electric guitars, etc. -- overpower the substance.

Sam, if you or someone who knows you reads this, I respect your work and your vision. But part of being a successful artist is knowing your way. This isn't it. Come back home soon.

what?

First off...I'm only on my first listen with this album, an album I've been dying to get ever since I heard there was going to be a new Iron & Wine album, and I'm just kind of sitting here in shock. This is not Iron & Wine. Wah Wah Pedals? Funky soul drumming? Horns? What is going on? It sort of feels like the day you found out Santa Claus wasn't real. Things have changed and I'm not liking it. I'm not liking it one bit!
