iTunes Editors’ Notes

Adding an increasingly soulful, R&B-influenced vibe to the grunge-era guitar noise of their earlier releases, 1992's Congregation is the album that defined The Afghan Whigs sound. Frontman and primary songwriter Greg Dulli's vocals are front and center throughout the album, delivering tales of both chemical and sexual dependency such as "I'm Her Slave," "Kiss the Floor," and "This Is My Confession." The funk guitar riff of "Turn on the Water" and the earnest cover of "The Temple," from the Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar, are early indications of the increasingly '70s-influenced direction The Afghan Whigs would pursue on later albums.

Whigs being born

This is a good album, solid, and you get to hear the sound that would be the Whigs (and the evolution to Twilight Singers) being born. It is raw and energetic. The cover is a literal representation of Dulli's musical influence - a musical child held and nourished by R&B while still finding his own voice.

dulli and company

if it is Whigs it is bigs….while Gentleman is the epic center of the whigs, this trip through sub pop still rocks. Struggling to fit into the sub pop label the whigs feel a bit lost here. Not that it is a bad record by any means it is an odd sub pop record, but they did know talent and innovation. hit your local whigs related show when they come to town. fun had by all

Although the band never broke into the mainstream, it developed a dedicated cult following, primarily because of lead singer/songwriter Greg Dulli's tortured, angst-ridden tales of broken relationships and self-loathing....
