iTunes Review

Koko Taylor was discovered by Willie Dixon in 1962, after years spent paying dues in Chicago blues clubs. This 1969 album, her debut for Chess Records, was produced by Dixon and makes abundantly clear why he was so enamored with her. Taylor belts out these cuts with the urgency of a woman on fire, as if singing for her life. Her version of “Wang Dang Doodle” is spine-tingling, but the rest of the tracks are just as powerful.

Koko Taylor Rules! And this album is her BEST work ever!

Koko Taylor is one of my biggest Inspirations! Oh Yeah! This album is an Oldee. I used to have it on tape and was truly bummed out when I couldn't find it. I have had this particular album stuck in my head for years. I was so stoked that it was digitaly remastered and rereleased. I am surprised that it took 32 + years to do so. I wish that every woman/man could hear this enlightening and kick-a*s recording. Straight to the point! Koko Taylor IS the Queen of the Blues ya'll! OWWWWW! Written on September 16,2006

Genre: Blues

Years Active: '60s, '70s, '80s, '90s, '00s

Accurately dubbed "the Queen of Chicago blues" (and sometimes just the blues in general), Koko Taylor helped keep the tradition of big-voiced, brassy female blues belters alive, recasting the spirits of early legends like Bessie Smith, Ma Rainey, Big Mama Thornton, and Memphis Minnie for the modern age. Taylor's rough, raw vocals were perfect for the swaggering new electrified era of the blues, and her massive hit "Wang Dang Doodle" served notice that male dominance in the blues wasn't as exclusive...
