Nah und Fern

First, in response to a review below, these tracks never had names. They've always been referred to by fans as Album Title - #. With that out of the way, I must say I applaud apple for adding this to iTunes (and a good selection of Kompakt as well). Before he founded what was to become one of the biggest labels in electronic music, Wolfgang Voigt produced music under literally hundreds of aliases. Gas, however, was his best and most ambitious work, and after fans had to resort to paying exhorbitant amounts of money on eBay for the out-of-print CDs, they are now available remastered for all to experience. There's little to say about the four albums here. Its immaculately produced in a time before digital equipment became so heavily used, and sounds better now than it ever has. Many tote the Gas project as one of the defining German works of music. Using samples of Schoenberg and others, Voigt creates the illusion of listening to a distant party in the middle of a forest. You won't hear any cheap digital filters or reverbs here, as Voigt meticulously creates ambient atmospheres with no lack of action. To pass this is to miss out on one of the densest and most intellectual (not to mention flat out enjoyable) works of all time.

Like some, not all

I discovered Gas through Drone Zone on SomaFM. I liked the tracks that Soma played so I bought the CD set through their website to support their public radio. If you lean toward ambient-dance you'll love this CD. I like more environmental ambient, and therefore, do not like the pulsating back beat on some of these tracks.

Essential Ambient

Out of all the music I have, Gas is probably the nicest texture. The only thing nicer is Eno's earlier ambient stuff but these records have been "must-have-with-me-at-all-times" for the last five years or so. I would pay double this amount to have these records. I'm also very impressed that Apple is starting to offer good music.
