iTunes Review

It says a lot about Teena Marie’s stature in the African-American community that at age 48—decades removed from her last hit—she was signed to Cash Money Records, the New Orleans-based rap label that launched the careers of Lil Wayne and Juvenile. La Dona is a contemporary R&B record gilded by her timeless voice, which hadn’t aged a day since her 1979 debut. Among the standout tracks are “Still in Love,” “Hit Me Where I Live,” and “Black Rain,” all of which have a rich funk sound akin to D’Angelo or Jill Scott. Even when she delves into hip-hop territory on “Off the Chain” or “Revelations 3:8 Introduction,” she sounds right at home. (After all, this lady had hip-hop swagger before it was even a genre.) The album also features “I Got You,” an autobiographical duet with Rick James that turned out to be his last appearance on record. La Dona shows that Teena Marie made records not for the money but because she still had a lot she needed to say; she'd cultivated a family of fans always eager to listen.

just a comment

Teena Marie is the supreme Vanilla child of R&B and Soul...she isn't blue eyed soul, she's the genuine article and her fan base, which is almost wholly African American gives her the respect she's due. So why does iTunes continue to dump her in the pop category? She's not pop, never was. She's a soul singer, same as Aretha, Patti, Chaka and the rest...and deserves to take her place beside a worthy member of the Diva's club.

One of her best.

I love Teena shes great. I saw her live in Alantic City and she blew my mind. This album is what rnb is all about. Having fun, but being sexual about it at the same time. Im only 14 (i'll be 15 soon) and i wish more of todays rnb would be like Teenas. Teena your awesome, and you deserve the title, "The Queen of RnB"!!!

Kudos 'Lady T'

I've always enjoyed Teena's voice...very distinctive..powerful yet sultry. This album is a definite keeper.

No white artist sang R&B more convincingly than Teena Marie, whose big, robust vocals were so black-sounding that when she was starting out, some listeners wondered if she was a light-skinned African-American. Marie grew up in west Los Angeles in a neighborhood that was nicknamed "Venice Harlem" because of its heavy black population. The singer/songwriter/producer was in her early twenties when, around 1977, she landed a job at Motown Records. It was at Motown that she met her mentor and paramour-to-be,...
