iTunes Review

The Pixies’ second album really shows us what they’re capable of. “Debaser” roars out the gate like an impatient bull. “Wave of Mutilation” sneaks a catchy melody past Kim Deal’s snarling bass and the swirling mass of electric guitars. Pop hooks move upfront for the Merseybeat-gone-mad “Here Comes Your Man.” And Black Francis and Kim Deal combine their unusual voices to create joy and tension on “Monkey Gone to Heaven.” Throughout Doolittle, the band's ambition is relentless.

David Lynch, Audio Format

Dark, but certainly not without light. Impossible to describe. No one sounds like the Pixies, the Pixies sound like no one. This album showcases what them at peak form, demonstrating what they are most known for: catchy, singable songs with abrasive touches, dark flourishes, but never without a wink from master songsmith Black Francis or a smile from bassist/velvet voiced background vocalist Kim Deal. One of my all-time, top five rock albums, along with Bowie's Ziggy Stardust, Weezer's Pinkerton, Radiohead's OK Computer, and Revolver.

Definitive Pixies

A few years after being introduced to the burgoning "college radio music" scene (there wasn't really a name for this stuff yet, other than post-punk) a friend of mine dubbed this album for me on cassette. It goes down as one of 5 cassettes I have ever broke from playing over...and over...and over...and over. It really never left the car. Doolittle is an album that embodies and defines so much of that time period: abrasive, catchy, tongue-in-cheek music with a bit of identity crisis thrown in. Post-punk but pre-grunge, an essential offering and a great start for people just getting into this band.

This Monkey has just gone to heaven

Their would be no alternative rock without this album. This band was so genius it's not even funny. One of the best albums ever hands down. Monkey Gone to Heaven is my favorite personally but they are all amazing so check it out.

Combining jagged, roaring guitars and stop-start dynamics with melodic pop hooks, intertwining male-female harmonies, and evocative, cryptic lyrics, the Pixies were one of the most influential American alternative rock bands of the late '80s. They weren't accomplished musicians -- Black Francis wailed and bashed out chords while Joey Santiago's lead guitar squealed out spirals of noise. But the bandmembers were inventive, rabid rock fans who turned conventions inside out, melding punk and indie guitar...
