Album Review

Cuban singer Xiomara Laugart, known in her native country simply as "La Negra," has already made a name for herself in the Latin jazz community as a singer in the Yerba Buena ensemble. On her eponymous solo debut, she combines elements of traditional Cuban folk music, jazz, and funk to create a musical mixture that dances around the edges of jazz but never commits to it fully, setting up a delightful musical tension that she nicely offsets with the warm, relaxed quality of her singing. Opening with the relatively poppy "La Llave," Xiomara then explores loungier sounds on "Por Ti" before lapsing into a slow and smoldering groove on "Tengo." "De Mis Recuerdos" blends a sweet melody and gently percolating rhythm to gorgeous effect, while "Moliendo Café" offers one of the strangest and most beguiling arrangements on the disc: rock guitars open the track playing a Kurt Weill-flavored cabaret lick, then the drums come in heavy; the guitars return later to shred in a decidedly metallic manner. The album's final two tracks consist only of Xiomara's voice, acoustic guitar, and the sound of snapping fingers. It's a surprisingly quiet but highly effective finish to a wonderful album.

Customer Reviews

a MUST for anyone that enjoys one of Latin America's most fabulous voices !

Under Andres Levin's direction she made Yerba Buena a great underground band. As a solo artist she is unbeliebable. I do wish she would have used a different producer(Not Levin) for this solo compilation. Andres is a great musician and producer in his own right but I would like to hear her on her own without any Yerba Buena influences. "Sin Ti" is a great sentimental ballad that touches the heart. "Moliendo Cafe" is an interpretation of a Cuban classic with a twist. Here Andres adds guitars and drum solos. Not a bad way a new generation of young Cubans(and other latinos) to hear this classic. In conclusion, this is a teffic effort by a totally under rated voice that should be catalogued amongst some of Latin America's best singers today. By the way, if in NYC catch her in the off Broadway musical "Celia". She will blow you away.

Mi negra

This women is exceptional. I saw here in the off Broadway play, "Celia" and I was floored. I then listened to her music and realized that she has her own style and sound. I am waiting for her to take off. This is a must own album. She is all of that and then some. Gracias mi negra.
