Album Review

Few artists have explored the borderlands that divide reggae, hip-hop, and political punk as fruitfully as producer, DJ, and multi-instrumentalist Dub Gabriel. On Anarchy & Alchemy he brings together an impressive list of guests including the excellent Brooklyn reggae singjay Dr. Israel, French chanteuse Judith Juillerat, rappers Yo Majesty and Jah Dan, and even R.E.M. vocalist Michael Stipe. Unsurprisingly, the music is kind of all over the place: "Run Down" (featuring No Surrender) is grinding, gritty hip-hop with a minimal beat and nasty, woozy synthesizers; "Mash Out" (featuring deejay Juakali) is a rough-hewn slab of heavily bouncing postmodern dancehall; "Cheree" is, oddly enough, a cover of an old Suicide song, built on "Wild Thing" chord changes and featuring an unrecognizable Michael Stipe on lead vocals. In between these wildly disparate entries are exercises in heavyweight dub ("Spirit Made Flesh"), so-so French electro-pop ("La Vie S'Envole"), and hip-hop excursions both brilliant (the exquisite "Pony Girl," featuring Yo Majesty) and mediocre (the serviceable hip-hop-reggae fusion of "Crooklyn Clouds," featuring 77Klash, Turbulence, Lutan Fyah, and Team Shadetek). Although it sounds unlike anything else you've ever heard, Anarchy & Alchemy is one of those albums that could only have come out of Brooklyn, which is a compliment — but no guarantee of consistency.

Dub Gabriel is back

Anarchy Alchemy finds Gabriel in collaboration with the likes of Jah Dan, Yo! Majesty, Juakali, Sami Yaffa (New York Dolls), Mark Pistel (Meat Beat Manifesto), Maga Bo, Dr. Israel, and even Michael Stipe from REM (doing a Suicide cover)- which seems to solidify Gabriel as not only a master of networking, but a man with a great talent for melding a myriad of styles and personalities into an entirely new and perhaps greater thing altogether. In the case of Dub Gabriel, the sum is greater than the parts.

Dub Pioneer Takes This One To The Pop

DUB GABRIEL IS BACK! After a short hiatus traveling the world building his repertoire, he delivers in spades! With a tight, succinct presentation, this collection of 10 tracks condense the normally lengthy dub experience to more of a "just enough" taste. The All-Star line up includes: Michael Stipe of R.E.M., Sami Yaffa of New York Dolls & Hanoi Rocks, Yo Majesty, Mark Pistel of Meat Beat Manifesto, Dr. Israel of Praxis, and it goes on and on... Definitely check this one out if you love Dub, but also if you have yet to get yourself wet in this format. The tasty tracks are sure to whet the appetite for further adventures beyond the ultraworld. Enjoy!

Biography

Genre: Electronic

Years Active: '00s

In the ‘90s and 2000s, producer/composer/mixmaster Dub Gabriel has specialized in a multicultural blend of electronica and world music — electronica as in ambient music, world music as in the music of the Middle East, India, and Africa (Arabic North Africa as well as black music from West and Central Africa). Electronica, of course, is a very far-reaching term; electronica is everything from the most forceful, harsh, and abrasive techno and rave music to the most laid-back downtempo and chillout,...
