Album Review
Recorded in the same year as the Brothers and Sisters album, this solo debut release is a beautiful amalgam of R&B, folk, and gospel sounds, with the best singing on any of Gregg Allman's solo releases. He covers his own "Midnight Rider" in a more mournful, dirge-like manner, and Jackson Browne's "These Days" gets its most touching and tragic-sounding rendition as well. Although Chuck Leavell and Jaimoe are here, there's very little that sounds like the Allman Brothers Band — prominent guitars, apart from a few licks by Tommy Talton (Cowboy, ex-We the People), are overlooked in favor of gospel-tinged organ and choruses behind Allman's soulful singing.

Laid Back
This is more of a comment than a review of this great old album. I’m walking through a ski shop in Aspen at the base of Little Nell. It is some time in the middle 1970s. I’m probably looking for a ski hat or goggles or maybe just hanging out. Gradually, I become aware of the music playing in the background. It’s really cool, and I really, really like the sound. I ask the young lady selling me my hat or whatever what the great album is that is playing. Surprisingly she doesn’t know. Now me, I’m in my thirties and music is just a background to my life. I don’t know one artist from another. Just what sounds good to me. I expect this young lady to know the latest. She tells me she doesn’t know what the album is but she will find out, that it’s on a tape in the back. When she returns, she tells me it is Greg Alman’s “Laid Back” album. Later that day I buy the 33 rpm record disk from a guy there in Aspen. Jump to 30 years later. This is still my favorite album. I still enjoy the laid back sounds that I have since acquired on tape and disk and Itunes. I especially like the mellow sounds of Queen of Hearts. You can’t beat Chuck Lavell on the piano on that cut. At least not until you hear him again on Eric Clapton’s Unplugged album.
Gregg at His Solo Best-Soul and Beauty
Laid Back is an excellent album because it captures Gregg at his vocal and song writing best. The album's sound owes it's beauty to Capricorn session artists led by Chuck Leavell and Cowboy. "Queen of Hearts" and "Multi Colored Lady" evoke a dramatic visual and emotional response. The tour after the album was released is captured on The Gregg Allman Tour. Listen to "Please Call Home" from Beginnings (Idlewild South) for a taste of what might have been if Duane were alive when this album was recorded. Enjoy Laid Back, it is a great album. Note: 6 of 9 songs are represented here.
Mmmmm...yes.
"Queen Of Hearts" is worth the price of admission alone, the rest is just sublime. A beautiful treatment of a wonderful love song. As I write this, my eyes are welling up with tears for my "Queen Of Hearts".....long gone from my life.
