Album Review

Listening to Zachary Breaux's commercial work on Laidback, it's clear that the guitarist was capable of a lot more. That said, this isn't a bad album — it isn't a masterpiece, but it's enjoyable most of the time. Mindful of George Benson's more commercial instrumental work, Breaux gets into a likable jazz/R&B/pop groove on such originals as "Small Town in Texas" and "West Side Worry." Harmonica great Toots Thielemans has pleasant, if unremarkable, cameos on John Barry's "Midnight Cowboy" and Breaux's mellow title song, while singer Audrey Wheeler joins Breaux for a vocal duet on a cover of Little Anthony & the Imperials' 1960s hit "Going Out of My Head." Though Breaux wasn't a bad singer, this track really belongs to Wheeler. Make no mistake: Laidback is a decent CD — although it's a shame to hear Breaux simmering so much of the time when you know he was quite capable of burning.

Customer Reviews

The great late Zachary Breaux is sorely missed and well appreciated. He was a unigue and fresh sound for the guitar. He blazed his own trail. His musical phrasing and extraordinary riffs are unmistakeably Zack. One of his albums was recorded live at Ronnies Scotts in London. Having noted that minor/major detail on the cd packet. I made sure to make Ronnie Scotts a place to visit on my trip to London. Go there and you will feel the magic and you will also feel the moment which helped make Zack and incredible gift to the world. All his CD are great. He accomplished much with so little time with us.

Uptown Groove

I would like to know why itunes has not put up his latest album "Uptown Groove". To me, it was his masterpiece. I hope you guys get that album...please!

Wonderful Guitarist!

"Groovin" and "Uptown Groove" are excellent albums as well! Who writes these "Album Reviews" for iTunes? They should put their name behind their words.

Born: June 26, 1960 in Port Arthur, TX

Genre: Jazz

Years Active: '90s

Influenced by George Benson and Wes Montgomery, Zachary Breaux was a flexible guitarist who could handle soul-jazz, post-bop, and hard bop as well as more commercial pop-jazz and NAC music. Though the jazzman only recorded a handful of albums -- including 1992's Groovin' and 1994's Laidback, both on NYC, and Uptown Groove on Zebra -- he kept busy as a sideman in the 1980s and 1990s and backed such major artists as Stanley Turrentine, Jack McDuff, Donald Byrd, Lonnie Liston Smith, and Dee Dee Bridgewater....
