This album/performance blows my mind. It is mellow and delicious. Cleo Laine is captured here at perfection. The piano arrangements are sumptuous. If you've heard Cleo scatting or being a little too boisterous.... well, that certainly doesn't happen here. This is sooooo much better than the "retro/big-band" release of a certain pop star in the 80's. Hint: Nelson Riddle was on board. What else can I say? Try the samples


I've been a fan of Dame Cleo's for years, and this album showcases what a great singer she is. Beautiful arrangements, and simple accompaniment, make this album sparkle.

With a multi-octave voice similar to Betty Carter's, incredible scatting ability, and ease of transition from a throaty whisper to high-pitched trills, Cleo Laine was born in 1927 in the Southall section of London, the daughter of a Jamaican father and English mother. Her parents sent her to vocal and dance lessons as a teenager, but she was 25 when she first sang professionally, after a successful audition with the big band led by Johnny Dankworth.
