iTunes Review

2011’s Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming was a gargantuan album to add to the canon of gargantuan M83 albums. Junk is rather different, but no less thrilling. Out go the blown-out anthems and in their place, nostalgically candied pop, disco and soul gems. It bobs merrily between gloriously indulgent (“Do It, Try It”, “Go!”), gloriously silly (“Moon Crystal” sounds like a ‘70s TV theme), and deeply romantic (“For the Kids”, “Atlantique Sud” and "Sunday Night 1987”). “Solitude”, meanwhile, is gorgeous, cinematic and blessed with a spellbinding keytar solo. It’s that sort of album.

Customer Reviews

a fitting album title

the paper I work for got an advance copy of this record in the office for reviews a couple of weeks ago. We've been listening to it pretty much on a loop hoping that at some point these horrific songs would start to sound like the M83 that we all love. They have not. this album is a classic example of a truly great artist selling out and cashing in on the fame that he got from his last album. He fired his entire touring band that was supposed to play on the next album after HUWD and made this album instead. this is truly junk. With this one album he has sullied his reputation as well as his back catalogue

oh dear god

please blast me off to space

Disappointed

After listening to the entire album, there's a few stand out songs, but the late 70's time warp feel definitely doesn't workout on long drives.

In 2003, Frenchmen Anthony Gonzalez and Nicolas Fromageau enjoyed international acclaim for the album Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts, a luscious blend of shoegaze aesthetics, ambient pop, and progressive textures. But M83 had been releasing material for several years, having issued their self-titled debut through the tiny but taste-making French label Gooom in 2001. The success of Dead Cities, Red Seas brought attention not only to M83, but also to the Gooom label, which helped fuel the popularity...
