Editors’ Notes

One of this album's many joyous highlights is the awesome cover of Frank Loesser’s “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” – an endearingly sweet duet performed by Chris Colfer’s character Kurt and his openly gay love interest Blaine (played by Darren Criss). Another change here is that Rachel (Lea Michele) steps a bit out of the spotlight to let the other cast members shine more (though her breathy take on the Carpenters’ “Merry Christmas Darling” is quite charming). Amber Riley’s Mercedes gives “Angels We Have Heard On High” a joyously soulful R&B makeover with beautiful backing gospel singers and a command solo performance. The kids also give “You’re a Mean One, Mr. Grinch” a splash of Broadway inspired pizzazz, while the more traditional “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen” reveals that they can easily hold their own as an a cappella act.

The numbers looked bleak, but Billboard's music charts told a different story the following week, when the Glee version of Journey's "Don't Stop Believing" became a Top Five hit. Performed during the pilot by the castmates themselves, the song eventually sold...
