More of the same, but with some nice studio hijinx...

Ok, so if you are a fan of ARS you know what this is. You have the last album, Still Night Still Light, and you listened to it until you could sing along with every offering and put your 19 month old son to sleep with it for the 1st week... oh, that may just be me, but you get the picture. This remix album is a bird of (music) of a slightly different color and more delineated plummage. They let some of their friends take these tracks and really go to town with them. The studio work on some of these is really solid and totally impressive. The Jens Lekman Shadows remix is masterful, and takes the song further along it's already established trajectory. It swoops up Burt Bacharach style, but before devolving into wet cotton candy, it gets chopped and cut-off and grounded back where it belongs. The Only You Can Make You Happy (Deradoorian Remix) is another awesome highlight. For as experimental and non-traditional as this song was in its original format - I would have liked to see this taken even further into the ether, but what we are given is great and fun and super solid. Anywhere You Looked (Your Twenties Remix) turns things into a late night urban radio jam circa 1982 with jazzy guitar and thin under pinned keyboard leads - which I would normally rush to turn off, but here it works by recasting this little jem as a wholly new experience that is a step above merely clever. Trente Moller would be proud of Organized Scenery (Bass Clef Remix), but they don't just ape the Moller aesthetic. They do some nice sub sonic things with it. And finally for my highlights section of this review I give you Another Likely Story (Neon Indian Remix), This has been kicking around the interwebs for a while, but it bears mentioning again, because this lo-fi seventies sound so very west-coasty and cool which is something I would never think would play well paired with ARS's cool, layered drones of lament and melancholy - but chock it up to good producing, it works!

The whole thing works and is totally worth your time and money. Besides by now you have almost wrung all the magic out of the original, and with master beat aesthetician and sub-harmonic guru, Heather D'Angelo (over there on the left of Erika), back in school learning how to save the world and following her heart, who knows how many more offerings there will be from these three Casio-toned lovelies.

there's more remixes out there....

Love it, but they left off the BEST one! The D*Note remix if Knight of Wands is awesome!

The Brooklyn indie pop outfit Au Revoir Simone features Heather D'Angelo (vocals/drum machine/keyboard), Erika Forster (vocals/keyboard), and Annie Hart (vocals/keyboard). Borrowing their name from a minor character in the Tim Burton comedy Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, the Casio-centric group came together in late 2003, when Forster and Hart befriended one another while traveling by train from Vermont to New York. From there, they became fast friends and began writing songs together. D'Angelo and Sung...
