iTunes Review

Horse Feathers' Justin Ringle is an underrated singer/songwriter who occupies the melancholy grounds also traversed by Pale Horse & Rider, Mark Kozelek, Bonnie "Prince" Billy, and Dolorean, to name a few potential touchstones. Each album quietly but assuredly establishes Ringle's talents for squeezing out emotions in even the quietest moments. "A Heart Arcane" starts things with a solitary feel that still harbors hope in its downcast chords. "Last Waltz" invites banjo and fiddle to fulfill the promise of a melody that traces the vibe of an old folk song while staking out its own territory. Ringle uses numerous musicians to paint his sound, but he never lets himself be overwhelmed. The recordings border on lo-fi, with Ringle insisting on no sweetening; he brings a live-in-a-room feel to all he touches. (Think Palace Brothers' debut album with slightly improved acoustics.) "Better Company" begins in dissonance before simmering to a sublime but tense quiet. "Bird on a Leash" goes even deeper, with the strings bringing out a rustic, Nick Drake–like quality.

Especially like "Fit Against the Country". Thanks for another great album!

Just incredible!

I've been waiting for this album for a while now, and it definitely didn't let me down. I love this band so much. Absolutely gorgeous music and wonderful lyrics. Love Ringle's voice!!! Get this album--and all the others--and then just sit somewhere quiet and ENJOY.

Their Best Yet

I've been listening to this album on repeat since the preview went up on NPR, and downloaded it as soon as it went on sale. I'm not really one for hyperbole, but this is easily one of the best albums I've heard in a long time. Beautiful from start to finish.
