"Bright White" was the first Shawn Phillips song I ever heard, when I was 14, in 1974. It was late at night and this song came on the radio. I was stunned. I immediately started figuring out all the stuff I would have to do to marry him, and that dream stuck with me for many years. Well, the man I married was certainly not Shawn Phillips. But the magic of his voice and his lyrics remain, 40 years later. I still love you, Shawn, and I always will.

Bright White

"Bright White" was the first song I heard by Shawn Phillips. It remains my favorite as does the same titled album released in 1974. As the album Bright White came to enjoy a regular rotation on my turntable, my fondness for the title track was quickly followed by a fondness for the entire album, especially for the songs "Victoria Emmanuele" and "All the Kings and Castles." To this day, I remain impressed by Phillips' vocal clarity and range, as well as by the instrumental arrangement of many of the songs on the album, which, for me, will always be exemplified by the horn arrangement on the song "Bright White."
In the winter of 1976 or 1977, while in college, my girlfriend and I had the opportunity to see Phillips at the R.K. Orpheum Theater in Davenport, Iowa. On the night of the concert, there was an extremely bad blizzard. The roads were slippery and visibility was nil. I recall driving, slipping and sliding our way to the venue. We arrived to find the theater almost empty, few people able to brave the elements. We quickly learned that his band had been snowed in -- snowed in, in DesMoines, I seem to recall. So Phillips came out to perform alone in the darkened theater sitting a few feet from the semicircle made up of the 20 to 30 people who managed to be in attendance that evening. Accompanying himself on his acoustic guitar, he sang songs from the album Bright White among others, singing and playing for several hours and closing to a standing ovation. The concert was as unique and as intimate as the album itself is.
This is the second time I've purchased the album, the first time vinyl, the second time digital. And, as you can probably already tell, I highly recommend it.

Shawn Phillips is one of most fascinating and enigmatic musicians to come out of the early-'70s singer/songwriter boom. The mere fact that he was a musician as much as a singer and songwriter made him stand out, and helped him attract a dedicated following. His refusal to shape his music -- which crosses between folk-rock, jazz, progressive, pop, and classical -- to anyone else's expectations allowed him to hold onto a large and dedicated cult following, without ever achieving the stardom that his...
