Late Nights & Early Mornings

Growing up with the Rock bands of the 70’s & the spinning lights of the disco ball, I have always shied away from any album that remotely gave me the impression an acoustical guitar was even in the same room while it was being created … Ironically the songs on this ep have become my favorite MiGGs songs of all! “Acoustical” for Don Miggs does not mean a watered down “Un-plugged” version of a song…make no mistake the ‘electricity’ is fully charged, merely the wattage of the bulbs is different …. The unsurpassed passion of the music is as colorful in my mind as any songs that have ever made me smile uncontrollably, or dance in my living room, or brought me to tears….the lyrics are so amazing it seems he has reached inside your subconscious and brought your own experience to the canvas of the guitar…..

Sunday. Dawn. Silence. Peace.

Sunday. Dawn. Silence. Peace. The backdrop is now set to experience the aptly named ‘Late Nights and Early Mornings’ CD by Don Miggs of the band MiGGs. This acoustic EP brings together 6 songs (7 actually, but more about that later) of contemplation, reflection, and musings on the complications and pain of life and love - not to mention skin-shedding. Singer and songwriter Don Miggs has written a candid emotoblog in this solo acoustic album, putting his personal stamp on every song as if each one were his only child. The lyrics of To Be Wrong, for instance, "She's busy taking sides/getting back a piece of her life/it's time she made a stand, draws a line into the sand" portray the struggles of a girl always doing what everyone else wanted her to do, wrapped in someone else's skin. She has to shed that skin to become her own person and do what she wants to do. In his lyrics, Don has gone beneath the surface, delving into the motivations and thoughts of each of the subjects in his songs - even when he himself is the subject. This personal connection also shows in the changing musical direction throughout - the addition of synth/keyboard layers on Paying For All of My Sins, the jazz and blues inspired Where Have You Been, and the upbeat poppiness of Don't Fix Me "I like being blind". And don't prematurely hit the eject button after the 6th and final song, Late Nights and Early Mornings. Your restraint will be rewarded with the discovery of the secret 7th song of the CD - the "acoustic chill" version of Everything is Fine, from MiGGs 2005 release InsOmnia. There is a certain appreciation for the honesty in revealing "I'm a good liar, keeping good cover/faking, faking, faking/I got so used to the bluffing/...we like it better when I pretend everything is fine". This acoustic EP is a departure from the 4-piece rock and roll MiGGs of the 2005 InsOmnia album and tour, but taking off alone was something that came about as the band fell apart late in 2005. And in reality, Don Miggs had already been writing a collection of quiet songs that did not require a full band. The newly reformed band MiGGs is currently back out on the road touring, and working on their next electric release (tentatively titled "Wide Awake" ). Now sit back, relax, and ruminate - the appropriate ambience is required to accept the heart-felt pain and redemption that is Late Nights and Early Mornings.

Formed: 2002 in San Francisco , CA

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '00s, '10s

Essentially a solo vehicle for journeyman singer/songwriter Don Miggs, the band Miggs makes mainstream melodic pop/rock with a bit of an alt-rock edge. Miggs and his original backing group released the debut album Anyway in 2002 and followed it up two years later with Insomnia. Around that time, Miggs began working with a new lineup and released the EP Late Nights & Early Mornings in 2007, with the long-player Unraveled arriving in 2008. Further personnel changes ensued, and in 2010 -- working with...
