Charm Personified

I'm loving this label! Apparently there are any number of live concerts from Munich with great sound and great artists just waiting to be released! The dearly departed Lucia Popp is one of my favorite singers ever, so I was very excited to see this issue! These concerts range from 1968 to 1983 and show some of Popp's transition from high, coloratura roles to more lyric ones. She is in predictably fine voice, singing some standard items for her and some surprises too (the Barbiere aria is very fun!). I was slightly disappointed to hear that the Smetana and Handel were sung in German, but I guess I should consider the audience. She also reminds us that much operetta was intended for classically trained singers and not wanna-be pop artists - she is fully engaged with these and quite delightful. Can't wait to see what this label comes up with next!

She had the ideal voice and personality for Viennese operetta, and was one of the best Rosalindes and Hanna Glawaris of her time. She was also a celebrated recitalist and lieder singer, and in both recitals and on the opera stage had a charming stage presence....
