iTunes Review

Ben Harper comes from a musical family and here’s the proof. This ten-track, all acoustic album features duets between Ben and his mother Ellen Harper, who wrote four songs to Ben’s six. The elder Harper’s parents founded the Folk Music Center and Museum in Claremont, California over 50 years ago and Ellen still works there. As a single mom, she raised Ben in these surroundings and he soaked up masterclasses taught by David Lindley, Taj Mahal and Ry Cooder. Childhood Home is a concept album, essentially, about the meaning of love and family and a young person’s sense of identity that causes them to leave the nest and to one day return to it with a greater understanding of their roots. Ben’s “A House Is A Home” covers this territory, with Ellen responding on “City of Dreams” with the tale of her hometown being swallowed up by suburban sprawl. The songs take largely a folk-country sound, with harmonies between Ben and Ellen striking a timeless pose on tunes like “Farmer’s Daughter,” “Memories of Gold” and “Altar of Love,” a waltz that speaks of her route to motherhood and the sacrifices it required.

Plea for Remastering

This album could be amazing! I am begging Ben Harper to remaster this album editing out his mom's vocals. All I can do with this album is try to filter out her voice and picture it solo. Some incredible work soiled by a loving gesture by Ben to allow her to be in the album. PLEASE remake the album SOLO, or with a voice that is much more suited to accompany such a talented artist. Look forward to hearing this album remastered to be his best work yet!

Heart warming

I have been a fan of Ben Harper since the early 90's when my friends and I used to hear him at the Belly Up in Solana Beach, CA.
This work with his mother is so very sweet and dear. Having two beloved sons, I know how strong the relationship is between a mother and son. This feels like a tribute to their love for each other. It's beautiful.
I've always loved Ben's soft music the best. It matches his gorgeous voice.

Combining funky, groove-laden soul with handcrafted acoustic folk-rock, Ben Harper enjoyed cult status during the course of the '90s before gaining wider attention toward the decade's end. As a young artist, he drew his influences from classic singer/songwriters, blues revivalists, guitar slingers, and jam bands like Blues Traveler and Phish, which meant he was embraced by critics and college kids alike.
