Album Review

Lee Ann Womack's eponymous debut showcases a promising country vocalist who is more comfortable with ballads and pop than down-home honky tonk. The slick, professional production helps make this self-titled album a pleasant listen, despite the fairly uneven songwriting, and Womack certainly has a voice that can make the mediocre sound appealing, which results in a winning debut.

Lee Ann's Debut Album is Very Good

Lee Ann Womack has such a great voice, and she uses it to great effect on this album, which contains material that is a bit "countrier" than what most of the nashville singers were recording in 1997 (the yea it was released). The highlights are "Never Again, Again," "The Fool" and "Make Memories with Me." There are a few duds, such as "Buckaroo" and "Man with 18 Wheels." Overall, this was a very, very solid album. Her best CD, though, is "I Hope You Dance." I had a hard time deciding between giving this 3 stars or 4 stars. I gave if 4 stars but that might be a bit generous because it does have a few throwaway songs, and because even the better songs, while very, very good, really arent classic songs that will be remembered years from now. Still, its a worthwhile purchase for fans of 1990s country.

Spectacular Debut

I checked out this album from the library, popped it into the CD player, plopped down in a chair to listen to it, and didn't budge until it had played all the way through. I was savoring every note of every track on this spectactular debut album. The style is based on traditional country, with some contemporary influence here and there. On most of the songs, she sounds like she's never listened to a pop album in her entire life. She's a country girl, and proud of it! Every song suits Lee Ann's voice perfectly, allowing her to show both her emotional side, and her fun-loving side. She seems equally comfortable on sorrowful ballads like "The Fool" and on toe-tapping country western kickers like "Buckaroo." I know this album was released over a decade ago, but it's one of the best debuts I've ever heard. It's no wonder that Lee Ann's career took off like a wild mustang when this album was released. She really is something special.

After spending several years as a professional songwriter, Lee Ann Womack became one of the breakout contemporary country stars of 1997 with her eponymous debut album. Born and raised in Jacksonville, Texas, Womack became infatuated with music at an early age, which is appropriate for the daughter of a disc jockey. Her father often took her to work, where she picked out records to play on the air. Following high-school graduation, she attended South Plains Junior College in Levelland, Texas. The...
