iTunes Review

Jemaine Clement and Bret McKenzie’s poker-faced parodies may mock pop’s grand aspirations and randy attitude, but they’re also strong enough to demand repeat listens. Their debut album pulls together the best of their live musical skits—the Pet Shop Boys-aping "Inner City Pressure," the tongue-twisting ridiculousness of "Hiphopopotamus Vs. Rhymenoceros," the self-defeating soul spoof “The Most Beautiful Girl (In the Room)”—and brings them to fully realized studio life as the soundtrack to their HBO series. David Bowie fans are strongly advised to check out “Bowie” as a matter of some urgency.

Brilliant In So Many Ways

To any Flight of the Conchords fan, none of these songs are a disappointment -- or a surprise for that matter -- and are welcome as a long overdue addition to one's music collection. The absolute genius is much more apparent when the focus is strictly on the music, from Jemaine's bass line on "The Most Beautiful Girl (In the Room)" to Bret's guitar and synth arrangement on "Robots." The only whinge could be the arrangement change at the beginning of "Bowie," as the lyrics sound a bit more jammed than what appears on Season 1 during the episode of the same name. Luckily the parts that follow with the many tempo changes are just as brilliantly impressive. Fortunately, only someone who's seen that particular episode quite a bit will notice any differences, and most of the time they are for the better and enrich an already delicious and innovative musical landscape. Anyone with an appreciation for musical and comedic genius must add this album to his or her collection, regardless of being a fan of the hit HBO series.

Finally Available Legally!

Fans of "Flight of the Conchords" will know that most of these tracks have been available abroad for some time. Finally fans can substantiate the excellence of their performance by doing the only real American thing there is to do: vote with your dollars! These iterations of the FOTC canon are new. Even if you have other versions, they are well worth your money. Encourage Bret and Jemaine to make more music. Buy this album! It Rocks!
