EDITORS’ NOTES

At once otherworldly and deeply emotional, the a cappella singing of the nuns of the Priory of Our Lady of Ephesus—the Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles—has earned critical acclaim far beyond the confines of sacred music. Lent at Ephesus follows two years after the release of the sisters’ much-praised Advent at Ephesus. It features a similar offering of traditional chants, modern hymns, and original compositions. The exquisite vocal harmonies heard in these recordings capture a sense of spiritual purity, yearning, and fulfillment that transcends the boundaries of language. Unified by the theme of Christ’s Passion, the album opens with the stately “Jesus, My Love” and leads listeners through the delicate vocal counterpoint of “Hosanna to the Son of David,” the ethereal simplicity of “Improperia,” and the soaring melodic lines of “O Sacred Head Surrounded.” The nuns perform three self-composed songs in English, with “My Mercy” standing out for its subtle harmonies and radiant message of hope. As both a work of beauty and an aid to contemplation, Lent at Ephesus resonates long after its last note has faded.

Beautiful Music for a Prayer Filled Lenten Season

lichoff,

I can remember when Mother Cecilia Snell was just a "regular person" who attended Mass at Holy Family and played French horn with the Columbus Symphony. (Great vocations come out of that parish) She and the sisters put in a lot of hard work on this album and it shows. What a great way to serve God through music and song.

I am so happy that there is a digital download with all the words to the songs since they are a mixture of English and Latin.

I am looking forward to playing and hearing them sing over and over again this Lent. When I go to Stations of the Cross, I will be hearing them sing the Stabat Mater in my head.

ORA ET LABORA!!

Just in time

mama dragon,

The good Sisters have once again provided us the perfect background for our Lenten Meditation.

About Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles

The Benedictines of Mary, Queen of Apostles are a group of Benedictine nuns who sing as a part of their daily worship rituals. Established in 1995 as a Roman Catholic religious order in Gower, Missouri, the nuns of the Priory of Our Lady of Ephesus -- the Benedictines of Mary -- sing upwards of five hours a day and have recorded two albums of hymns and chants with 2012's Advent at Ephesus and 2013's Angels and Saints at Ephesus. Both albums have garnered acclaim, with Angels and Saints at Ephesus hitting the number one slot on the classical traditional Billboard chart in 2013. ~ Matt Collar
