iTunes Review

This 1978 Canadian radio broadcast captures Elvis Costello performing tunes from his first two albums. There’s an inherent intensity and expressiveness not found in the studio recordings—that rare sound of a taut live band fully aware of their musical purpose. “Radio Radio,” “Pump It Up,” and “Welcome to the Working Week” all rage with spare, tightfisted punk fury, and the relatively gentle “Little Triggers” soothes with rawer, bruised-up sensitivity. There’s in-your-living-room immediacy, too, and you can feel, for example, the hollowed-out reggae of “Watching the Detectives” like never before.

elvis of yesteryear

This is a solid album. I was only eleven when this was recorded, and did not discover Elvis until I was fourteen. There is no one else like him, so if you are fourteen and reading this, give it a listen. Your parents might know the words.

The Costello Show must go on!

I've been fortunate enough to have seen several Elvis show's across the decades; the solo acoustic tours, with and without the attractions, with the imposters, even with Clover(!) and most recently with the Sugarcanes. My one regret is not being old enough to have seen him while on tour in support of This Years Model and Armed Forces. The energy and intensity on the live recordings from this era, which have surfaced on the masterful and underrated Hip-O Deluxe Editions of My Aim Is True and This Years Model, capture a band and leader at their primal best. Consistent is not a strong enough word, these shows illustrate a master showman with a more reliable delivery record than Fed Ex. El Mocambo not only has to have one of the greatest set lists, but provides us with the only known recording of the LESS THAN ZERO Dallas Version! It's my understanding that this release is to be the first in a series of live releases from Elvis' vaults - color me impressed and impatient! Can't wait for the next installment!

i love elvis costello!!!!!!!<3

When Elvis Costello's first record was released in 1977, his bristling cynicism and anger linked him with the punk and new wave explosion. A cursory listen to My Aim Is True proves that the main connection that Costello had with the punks was his unbridled passion; he tore through rock's back pages taking whatever he wanted, as well as borrowing from country, Tin Pan Alley pop, reggae, and many other musical genres. Over his career, that musical eclecticism distinguished his records as much as his...
