Album Review

If you didn’t pay close attention to American Idol Season 8, you can be forgiven for thinking that Kris Allen came in second to Adam Lambert. After all, Lambert is the one who grabbed all the headlines and magazine covers, while Allen plugged along as the cute, safe alternative to the self-styled glamazon, which was enough for him to take the crown, if not enough to create much excitement. Then again, Kris Allen isn’t about excitement, he’s about comfort, something that’s plainly evident on his immaculate eponymous debut, an album every bit as unexpected as his name. Allen possess an easy touch, makign already pleasant surroundings a touch friendlier. Kris pens almost all of the 12 songs here (the exceptions being “Live Like We’re Dying,” “Written All Over My Face,” “The Truth” ), which unifies the album. Unhip it may be by design, but at least Kris Allen delivers the goods: it’s tuneful and likeable, melodic enough to merit a close listen, Rovi

Easily one of the best albums of 2009

This is by far the best idol debut of any contestant yet, winner or not. And easily one of the best albums of 2009. Allen combines everything that's great about bands like lifehouse, matchbox 20, maroon 5, and the script onto one album and makes it even better. He killed this debut. His soulful and heartfelt melodies are like nothing I've heard in a long long time. And i'd consider myself a music fanatic. Best of luck to Kris. Can't wait to see these all live, especially red guitar.

Kris Delivers

This is by far WAY better than I expected. I was thinking this was going to be a simple, mainly acustic album, but Kris nailed it. I cheered him on when he was on AI and honestly thought Adam was going to beat him, but he's proved himself to be a true artist. The night he covered "Heartless" I knew he had the makings of a truly great singer. This album is awesome. Before We Come Undone is right now my favorite track. I'm only part of the way done listening and I'm hooked. Great Job Kris. I am proud to be your fan.

Actually really good!

Almost every song on this album is suprisingly catchy. This is the perfect sound for Kris--not too much influence from mainstream pop, but just enough for it to be radio-friendly. I think not only will all of his fans from american idol be happy with this, but this music is good enough to go beyond the borders of the show's viewers. My favorites after the first listen were "live like we're dying" "Can't stay away" and "Alright with me"...but its all good!

Although not the first contestant to play his own instrument on American Idol, Kris Allen benefitted more than most from the experience, and his coffeehouse singer/songwriter vibe earned him a first place finish in 2009. Pitted against powerhouse vocalist Adam Lambert during the show's finale, Allen emphasized his wide-ranging abilities as a musician, playing piano during a cover of "Ain't No Sunshine" and strumming the guitar for an acoustic take on Kanye West's "Heartless." The instrumental accompaniment...
