One of my top five favorite bands! Great new single/cover of The Call. I can't wait for their new album next month.

A fair effort

Worth a try to cover a great song, but the original by the call is far superior in every way.

An Excellent Approach to a 80s Rock Standard

For those who don't know, BRMC bassist/singer Robert Levon Been is the son of former Call frontman Michael Been, who in his "retirement" served his son as the band's sound man, as well as mentor. After his dad's tragic passing in 2010 (from a heart attack while BRMC was on tour in Europe), the band decided, for the first time, to cover one of The Call's songs.

And what an incredibly inspired choice. For a band hardly known for shiny, happy tunes, to pick one of the more affirming and optimistic of the Call's songs was something of a masterstroke. And, unlike a lot of covers that seem to try too hard to mimic the original, this is definitely a Black Rebel Motorcycle Club approach to the tune. And…ultimately…it works.

If you are expecting a note-by-note rendition of the 1989 classic, you are going to fuss over this. But, that simply wasn't going to happen. Father and son have incredibly distinct vocal styles, but distinct from one another, as well. BRMC does not often utilize a keyboardist, thus the contributions in the original from Jim Goodwin are not replicated here.

But, in its own way, it is a fitting tribute. What's more, in exciting news for both bands, it won't be the last bridge from past to future, as The Call announced this week that they will reunite for two shows in their adopted home state of California…with Robert Levon Been sitting in his father's stead.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

The seed that became Black Rebel Motorcycle Club — or BRMC for short — was planted in 1995, when Robert Levon Been (aka Robert Turner) and Peter Hayes met while attending high school in San Francisco. The two formed a solid friendship and a shared camaraderie based on a mutual love of early-'90s U.K. bands like Ride, the Stone Roses, the Jesus and Mary Chain, and My Bloody Valentine. Despite such similar tastes, both joined different bands — Hayes spent time in the Brian Jonestown...
