iTunes Review

Singer/multi-instrumentalist Jon Black recorded the bulk of this striking song cycle at his home studio in Birmingham, Ala. But the expansiveness of his vision makes the album’s tracks feel more like the work of a full-blown rock band. Black combines acoustic guitars, pianos, and choir-like background vocals with various computer-generated loops and effects to create a distinctive synthesis, punctuated by Josh Cannon’s brawny drum work. With evocative imagery, Black's songs sketch out a pilgrim’s journey across an America haunted by division and doubt. The hymn-like strains of “Let Your Heart Hold Fast” and the early Dylan-esque folk balladry of “New York Lights” have a timeless quality, while “I’m Wrong” finds Black traversing a widescreen soundscape that makes full use of modern studio wizardry. At times—especially on the angst-filled “Movie Screens”—the album approaches the grandeur of classic Pink Floyd (with a more positive outlook). Mixed by Tom Schick (Wilco, She & Him), Fort Atlantic boasts a clear, boldly defined sound to match the ingenuity of Black's musical ideas and the compassion of his lyrics.

Let Your Heart Hold Fast

Was in HIMYM and brought me here but this entire album is beautiful

Fort Atlantic

This album is reminiscent of early Jackson Browne. Excellent song writing. Jon Black has a lovely voice. If you haven't already, you should check out his earlier records that were released under his name. Also, if you ever have the chance to see him live, it'll be worth whatever the ticket price is.

No brainer

If you have any musical taste at all, Fort Atlantic should be a mainstay in your library along with Jon Black's previous works. Solid songwriting, great instrumentation, and an authentic voice.

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '10s

Fort Atlantic is essentially singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and 21st century studio whiz producer Jon Black and drummer Josh Cannon, and the duo integrates laptops, loops, and other digital doodads into an experimental yet decidedly grounded modern pop and rock sound. Black is the center of things, and his vision takes into account classic rock styles even as he makes use of what the digital era affords him as a producer, and the band's tracks make full use of the recording studio as...
