Editors’ Notes

Making the jump from beatmaking and remixing to a full-on album is often an elusive goal for electronic musicians. For the duo Letherette, its self-titled debut bridges this gap while demonstrating a leap forward in artistry. With an appearance on Giles Peterson's Brownswood series and a remix of the artist Bibio, the pair showed that it had the production chops to make relevant and compelling beat-driven music. But on Letherette the duo turns this ability into an art, giving songs the time to breathe and change. Making references to soul and '70s rock in the midst of choppy instrumental hip-hop, there's a parallel to earlier works of RJD2 or Daft Punk in the mix. Yet Letherette's willingness to go more minimal and organic than those artists, and its kinship with the current generation of beatmakers, gives the duo an angle all its own.

No reviews???

Thank you Letherette.
This album is brilliant. Absolutely brilliant. It's an enigma actually. Musically relevant, and beautifully mastered. It's a musical journey of highs and lows and everything. I can't say enough good things about the songs. Maybe one or two tracks I could do without, but it wouldn't be the same record without them,
Anyhow.. It's kind of a big deal.
Oh, and I NEVER write reviews. I just though this one deserved recognition.
Album of the year so far…. Just waiting to hear the new Boards of Canada.
If Daft Punk hadn't done Homework, I'd have LOL'd at R.A.M.
Instead, I just lol'd.
Save your money, don't but Daft Punk's new album. Buy this one.
Buy it on vinyl too. I did. Placed somewhere between Bonobo's new album, and DJ Shadow "Entroducing".
Almost two months later, it still bangs.
No brainer. Just get it.

Production's great, chords could be more focused

It's clear that the production, sampling, groove, all sound very professional. The only critique I have about it is that the chords can get a little unfocused and chaotic at times, making it harder to have a recognizable tune to it. But otherwise, really good.

4 star average?

Man, too many jealous snobs rating this one.

A Wolverhampton, England-based production duo, Letherette is the project of Andy Harber and Richard Roberts, who form and fuse house, electro, and hip-hop into a stylish whole that at times recalls the work of Dilla and Daft Punk. After becoming friends at age 11 and going to college together, the pair began recording tracks together as Letherette in 2003. Part of the Artists' Valley collective, which also counts Bibio's Stephen Wilkinson as a member, Harber and Roberts released the first two Letherette...
