Editors’ Notes

Ten years into their recording career, Chevelle takes a detour into America’s paranormal fringe on Sci-Fi Crimes. This time, they play with themes of supernatural activity and interplanetary contact while continuing to lay down churning grooves and astringent guitar lines. “Roswell’s Spell,” for instance, stomps along to a thunderous beat worthy of John Bonham as singer Pete Loeffler wrestles with the facts behind UFO mythology. More insinuating is “Highland’s Apparition,” a ghost story offered in a breathy, slightly sinister tone. The band remains committed to serving up thick-cut, riff-driven rock in the manner of past albums and tracks like “Sleep Apnea” and “Letter from a Thief” strut with predatory menace, while “Mexican Sun” displays a tormented sort of swagger and “This Circus” twitches with a hint of funk. As ever, the band expresses disdain for human pretensions — the brutal “Jars” tears into mankind’s hope for self-salvation. At its core, Chevelle remains committed to its bedrock moral principles, even as it has fun batting around some choice conspiracy theories.

Customer Reviews

Chevelle never disappoints.

I've been a huge huge Chevelle fan from the beginning and while this doesn't top 2002's Wonder What's Next, it isn't far behind. Heres my song by song quick rating list: 1. Sleep Apnea - 11/10 - Best.Chevelle.Song.Ever. If I had to pick one from their entire library to represent their best work, this would be it... 2. Mexican Sun - 8/10 3. Shameful Metaphors - 9.5/10 - My second favorite song on the album. 4. Jars - 8.5/10 - The first single released and its pretty solid. 5. Fell Into Your Shoes - 7.5/10 - Low point of the album for me. 6. Letter from a Thief - 8/10 7. Highland's Apparition - 8/10 8. Roswell's Spell - 8.5/10 - Some great new sounds mixed with vintage Chevelle. 9. Interlewd - N/A - Not much to say here. 10. A New Momentum - 8/10 11. This Circus - 8.5/10 - Great way to close the album.. Absolute Must Buys: Sleep Apnea, Shameful Metaphors Recommended: Jars, Roswell's Spell, This Circus Final Rating: 4.5/5 - This IS Chevelle's 2ND best album.

Hands down the best Chevelle album

The album starts out with that hard riff from Pete and it never stops from there. From the beginning you can already tell that Chevelle has changed their style, but they still rock just as hard and they've really changed for the better. There is less screaming on this album compared to past albums, but Pete's vocals really make this cd, along with the great guitar riffs and there are even a couple solos which are non existant on past albums. Sam hits the drums harder than ever and Dean really has helped to make this a better band with his ability on bass. The lyrics are very meaningful and this album brings out so many emotions in me. It fits every mood. Buy this album, you will not be disappointed. This really is their best cd.

man

this album restores my faith in rock.

Biography

Formed: 1995 in Chicago, IL

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

Inspired by the lurching riffs of Helmet and the soft/loud vocal dynamics of Tool, the Chicago-based trio Chevelle formed in 1995 with an aggressive, heavy sound. Comprised of brothers Sam (drums), Pete (vocals, guitar), and Joe Loeffler (bass), the band began playing parties and outdoor events, which quickly led to bookings at Chicago clubs when youngest member Joe was just 14 years old. In 1999, Chevelle released their Steve Albini-produced debut album, Point #1, on Squint Entertainment. Three...
