Prog? Post-Prog? Something completely new?
Of the three artists involved, this recording most closely harkens to David Torn's solo work such as "Tripping:Over:God" and "What Means Solid, Traveller." More lively in many ways than "Cloud About Mercury" which features both Torn and Levin and more "rock" oriented than other projects such as "Prezens" and "Polytown," the addition of Alan White makes for a hard core and amazingly solid outing past the reaches of progressive rock, post-prog and other permutations of music which requires advanced listening techniques. There are certainly elements of each artist's previous work, and one can definitely hear similarities between this album and some of the work done by Trey Gunn and his compadres, such as work with "Tu" and "KTU," but this is a different beast all together.
Torn's relationship to film music and looping technologies and leading edge guitar playing and processing is the stuff of legend, Levin's work with everyone from King Crimson to Peter Gabriel and an amazing variety of artists from practically every musical genre is a subject that can hardly be exhausted, yet, I found it odd that in most of the promotional material, someone found it necessary to explicitly state that Alan White is "from YES." Duh. Since he took over the reigns from Bill Bruford, not an easy thing to do, during the "Close to the Edge" tour back in the 70s, White has been a luminary link between the solidity of Rock and the slippery avant guard of Progressive music. And "Yes" isn't his only credential: The Plastic Ono Band, Joe Cocker, George Harrison, not to mention his other projects Circa: and White - this guy is the real deal and with this association with Torn and Levin it might be possible to honestly say that rhythm has taken another turn...
There is nothing weak on this collection of pieces and a lot to stretch the ears, mind and musical soul. Gonna practice my praying skills because I'm gonna pray that they make more albums, I'm gonna pray that they tour together and I'm gonna pray that those with an adventurous spirit will find this gem and gaze into it's tri-faceted beauty.
This album is a must for all King Crimson and prog fans! I think it rates as some of the best work in a long time from each of the legendary members of this super group. Highly enjoyable, no filler, every tune is a work of art!
I really wanted to like this. Really. Levin is one amazing bass & stick master, perhaps the finest ever, and Torn is often ridiculously creative. But you can tell they were trying with this disc, so very hard, and that's precisely where the potential for magic gets lost. Maybe it's that Alan White hasn't been able to top his groundbreaking drum fill in "Instant Karma," even after all those years with Yes. Pity. LTW should have been inspirational; instead, it's only the document of a jam session.
