Album Review

On Soul Sauce, Poncho Sanchez pays tribute to his late boss and hero vibraphonist Cal Tjader. Ruben Estrada of the Estrada Brothers (who sounds remarkably close to Tjader on vibes) was added to Sanchez' octet for the special project. Among the highlights are "Soul Sauce," "Morning," and "Poinciana Cha Cha." Solos are taken by trumpeter Stan Martin, trombonist Alex Henderson, and Scott Martin on reeds, but Estrada often takes honors. Recommended.

Wow ! An excellent tribute!

I beg to differ with the gentlemen's critique. Poncho Sanchez is one of the living kings of latin jazz, and for him to pay homage to a "former" king of latin jazz is phenomenal. What you wind up with are the beautiful Cal Tjader tunes of yesterday, with the modern touch of Poncho Sanchez. The album leaves you with a sense of gratitude...gratitude for the talent of Sanchez, and the wonderful memories of Tjader. I loved it.

Memories of Cal

Cal Tjader fans will love this tribute from his sideman of many years. The quality of production, unavailable in Cal Tjader's years, has allowed Poncho Sanchez to give Cal's music new life. The vibes master would approve this totally enjoyable collection of some of his best work.
