Best Night of Our Lives

Best Night of Our Lives

After surviving numerous membership shuffles, Everyday Sunday displays renewed clarity of vision on 2009’s Best Night of Our Lives. The Columbus, Ohio Christian rock quartet has been perfecting their anthemic brand of punk-pop for the better part of a decade, and lead singer Trey Pearson’s earnest vocals are lent greater impact by a beefed-up guitar sound this time out. The band delivers the right balance of crunch and bounce on galvanizing tracks like “In the End,” “Under Your Thumb” and “Breathing for Me.” It might be easy to pigeonhole Everyday Sunday as a God-centered Green Day if it weren’t for the distinctive mix of personal confession and spiritual insight displayed in their lyrics. Pearson has a knack for attacking sin without denigrating the sinner, as shown by “Lies and Fear Go Hand In Hand.” He’s equally good at expressing empathy for a bereft friend (“Come Around”) and capturing the idealism of young believers (the title tune). “Figure It Out,” written for Pearson’s fiancée, offers a joyful romantic interlude.
