"Life As We Know It" by Bernie Chiaravalle

"Life As We Know It" Since 1988, Bernie Chiaravalle has held down the guitar chair for 5-time Grammy winner Michael McDonald, and this CD, “Life As We Know It,” is his second solo release. Indeed, Chiaravalle’s talents have taken him a long way from his Bay Area days as guitarist for popular west coast bands, Logos and Page One. In between traveling the globe with McDonald, he somehow finds the time to nurture his own prodigious songwriting talent. Besides co-writing four songs on McDonald’s “Blue Obsession” CD, he has also had his songs recorded by Larry Carlton, Ambrosia, and others. “Life As We Know It” is a satisfying showcase for Chiaravalle’s considerable skills as a writer, guitarist and singer. The CD kicks off on a high-energy ramble with “The Love You Want,” and then easily slides into the mid-tempo groove of “The Way To My Heart,” featuring lovely backing vocals from Amy Holland McDonald. One of my favorite tracks is the superb “Two Goodbyes Away,” with its subtle layering of guitars and keyboards propelling the tune forward. Anyone who’s ever had their heart handed to them can relate to the sad resignation in the final verse: “This is the moment of our fateful day. The end of all our hopes and plans.” “You Alone,” a father’s gentle and loving wisdom for his child, is simply lovely with Michael McDonald’s ethereal backing vocals providing emotional support. The bluesy “Where’ You Runnin’” with it’s radio-friendly melody, also features McDonald on backing vocals. One of the CD’s real highlights is the superb “Someday You Will.” Chiaravalle’s gentle acoustic strumming perfectly compliments the tender melody and sadly optimistic lyrics that somehow offer hope in the midst of tragedy. It’s a touching track. “The Way It Looks From Here” brings the mood back up with a primal percussive groove and, as I see it, could lyrically be offering some wise perspective on the tragedy of 9/11. I love the way he builds this track. In “Then Again, Maybe Not,” with it’s McCartney-esque melody, the song’s protagonist speaks for a lot of us when he realizes that, at the end of the day, we sometimes really don’t know what the hell is going on. I found myself singing this one long after I’d turned off the player. Now settled into the local songwriting community near Nashville, Chiaravalle has obviously found inspiration in his new surroundings. As he carrys on his long musical relationship with Michael McDonald, I’m looking forward to hearing Bernie Chiaravalle's own continued growth as a musician on his as-yet-untitled next CD due for release in early 2006.
