Album Review

Heavier and darker than 2010's well-received Deceiver, the 13-track Life Cycles is the first release from Phoenix, Arizona-based metalcore outfit the Word Alive to not feature keyboardist Dusty Riach, who left the group in early 2012 along with drummer Justin Salinas. Technical, relentless, and littered with nasty riffs and explosive breakdowns, Life Cycles avoids the dreaded sophomore slump by being bigger and bolder than its predecessor, and offering a diverse set of songs with highlights coming from "For Your Health," "Evolution," "Wishmaster," the anthemic title cut, and the dense and atmospheric "Dragon Spell."

Customer Reviews

Ehhh

I hate to say it, but I was fairly disappointed. I am a huge fan of the Deceiver and was looking forward greatly to Life Cycles. I found the singing to be lacking in what the Deceiver had. I will say the instrumental section of the album was flawless with everything. I had mixed feelings about the screaming. Live A Lie being EXACTLY what I wanted to hear in this album. Wishmaster was a good song, along with a few others. It is safe for me to say that it is a good album, the vocals just caught me off guard. I look forward to what else they have to bring. I think that if I listen to it a few more times, it will grow on me though, I'll give it a few more listens, and I'm hoping that it will. All in all, I hope these guys continue making the music that they want to.

Best album of the year

Every song blows away the competition with Tyler "Telle" Smith's incredible vocals.

Great album, not quite as heavy as Deceiver

First off, I really like this album, don't get me wrong. I don't really know how to word what I'm trying to say, but I'll try. I think I like MORE songs on Life Cycles than I do on Deceiver, but the ones that i DO like on Deceiver, I like MORE than the ones I do on Life Cycles.
