Album Review

Deborah Berg has a voice so clean that you feel as if you have taken a long bath after listening to this album. Berg, along with her Eye To Eye partner, keyboardist Julian Marshall, are impressive songwriting and performing talents. In fact, "Nice Girls," which was a Top 40 hit, is a pop music masterpiece. A who's who of studio musicians are all over this album, including Chuck Rainey, Elliot Randall, Jim Keltner, Abraham Laboriel, and Dean Parks, in addition to Rick Derringer, Timothy B. Schmit, and the late, great Jeff Porcaro. Produced by Gary Katz of Steely Dan production fame (Donald Fagen also makes a guest appearance), Eye To Eye's debut release is almost as stunning as any of the Dan's albums. Unfortunately, the pinheads at Warner Brothers have never released this album on compact disc in the United States (though it may be available in Japan).

Eye to Eye

I bought this album when it first came out in 1982 (on vinyl back then) The only way I heard about it was because I was working in a record store and came across it. I don't believe it got a lot of radio play. All I can say is that there isn't a weak song on the album, which I find to be VERY rare. It's produced by Gary Katz, who also produced Steely Dan. Imagine the quality of Steely Dan's songs but with a very strong, captivating female vocal (Deborah Berg). Deborah's vocals are really amazing and what drives this album (she co-wrote every song). Jeff Porcaro, from Toto fame played on drums; Timothy B. Schmidt (Poco, Eagles) lent to the background vocals; and Rick Derringer and Dean Parks did the guitar work. Donald Fagen, of Steely Dan, even provides a synthesizer solo on my favorite song off the album, On the Mend. I'm definitely re-purchasing this album from iTunes. It's one of those great little-known albums I've been waiting for iTunes to make available. Please check out the previews of these songs to see if you agree with me.

Eye to Eye

I've waited over 20 years to find this album. My good friend, DR, blared this at our fraternity house at perfectly timed intervals. Nice Girls was a theme tune back then. 23 years later, this little known classic remains fresh with a sophisticated sound -- well ahead of its time when it came out. Terrific addition to a well-balanced collection.

Eye to Eye

This is one of my all time favorites. I first heard it driving down Ridge Ave. in Evanston, IL on WXRT and bought it that very day - that was around 1982. It has never gotten old, always seems fresh, and I'm very happy they finally put it out on CD. Buy it and enjoy.

The duo Eye To Eye formed in 1979 after keyboardist Julian Marshall (formerly of Marshall-Hain) heard dancer/singer Deborah Berg sing at an improvisational dance performance in San Diego. Weeks later, Berg flew to London, where she and Marshall began writing together at his home. They quickly garnered a record deal with Automatic Records in the U.K., releasing the single "Am I Normal." In 1982, Eye To Eye released their self-titled debut album on Warner Bros. Records.
