iTunes Review

“I just want to listen to people’s stories, hear what they have to say,” trills Gothenburg-born singer-songwriter Jens Lekman on “To Know Your Mission”, his fourth album’s euphoric curtain-raiser. That’s no understatement. Across 10 exultant modern vignettes, Lekman skips nimbly from skittering odes to rebellion (“Hotwire the Ferris Wheel” with Tracey Thorn) to glorious disco workouts (“How We Met, The Long Version”), and cements his place as one of indie-pop’s most affecting—and unconventional—bards.

Great arrangement, horrible lyrics

He'd be more listenable if he just sang from a Volvo Owners Manual. Ever since his song about slicing an avocado, Jens Lekman has busted on the "great arrangement horrible lyrcis" scene. Better suited for shilling cooking utensils on TV, his "my larynx is being squeezed by the ghost of ABBA" voice has had him stopped at many a border. Sadly, he's still creating really good pop music with atrocious vocals and even worse lyrics. He's lucky his producer hasn't walked out of the door.

It's just fun. Have fun.

I think the previous reviewer might be a jilted ex-girlfriend. This album is poppy and fun. The words are his words and if you are a fan, you will enjoy this album. It's one of my favorites already. If you are not a fan, then stop buying and reviewing his releases. Done!

Born February 6, 1981, in Gothenburg, Sweden, Lekman exhibited little interest in music as a child, but at 14 was recruited to play bass in a friend's cover band. Within weeks he was writing his own original material, quickly accumulating hundreds of songs. Assuming the alias...
