wish she didn't force herself this way

I love Imogen Heap. A fantastic artist and producer. At first I was skeptical of the whole process - blogging, using fan samples, etc... - but watched a few of the blog spots and found it to be quite interesting and cool.

Given the timeline she gave herself, what she's done here is impressive, but this pales in comparison to the work she did on Ellipse. I've listened to the track about 10 times now, but it sounds incomplete and lacks a sonic arc that gives it the umpf most of the Ellipse tracks had. It sounds more like a demo that (surprise surprise) was thrown together quickly because you've only got two weeks to get something out to the masses.

As far as I know, Ellipse was the only record that she hasn't done on a preconceived timeline/deadline, so it comes as no shock to me that it is by far her most mature and well-balanced work. Not that deadlines are bad things - otherwise, nobody would get anything done! But even Imogen expressed skepticism about the quality of this track a day before its release. She hadn't even really finished all of the lyrics!

I really wish she would slow down and realize that most of the time, great art comes to fruition on its own timeline, not the other way around. I would rather that she announced it was going to take an extra week, month, or year to get the track up to par rather than release something because her calendar told her to.

Most Original Artist in a looong time.

Amazing artist.
Gorgeous song.
However, the process in which Heap built this song is sublime.

The process and creation of this track was an incredible thing to watch unfold day by day. I hope that #heapsong2 follows its footsteps, can't wait for more!

As a rule, group efforts are normally launched before a solo career — not after a solo career is in full swing. First, the artist makes a name for himself/herself as part of a group, then the artist leaves the group to become a full-time solo performer. That's the standard procedure, but British singer/songwriter Imogen Heap took a different approach, having already established her solo credentials for several years before becoming half of the London-based duo Frou Frou. Although based in London,...
