This is Jackie Greene’s first solo release since becoming part of Americana supergroup Trigger Hippy, but it follows through on the direction of his earlier albums, blending bluesy guitar mastery with sophisticated yet roots-conscious songwriting. Tunes such as the swaying, anthemic “Silver Lining” and the hook-heavy stomper “The King Is Dead” are like classic rock for the 21st century. Greene’s simmering soloing on “Where the Downhearted Go” proves why the blues-obsessed adore him, and easygoing, folk-flecked tracks such as “Motorhome” give the album a rootsy gravitas.
