The Best of MB's Early Solo Works

Of the three album's Martyn Bates released on the little known Integrity label, Stars Come Trembling was the brightest gem. He reached the peak of his pop tendencies here, with songs like "Her & Some Heaven" and " The Words of the Haunted" unleashing relentless vocal and guitar hooks; but most of the songs take unexpected turns that take you to refreshing new places with the format. "The Gift of Lieing" is a temple of a ballad, and the elegant "Lightening Following" gently changes tempos in what are like movements (while avoiding any prog rock conventions). What stands out most is some of Martyn Bate's best lyric writing to date and, as always, his remarkable voice. A great album to have come back to the light of day!
