Singin' in a Black Pine Tree

This is a phenomenal album. It positively blew me away. When I first picked it up, I figured-- based upon its quaint, antique colored (it's dark green in the version I have) cardboard digipak case--that Peter and the Wolf would be yet another indie-pop folkish tag-along (somewhat like Patrick Porter) to the lo-fi bedroom scene. After I had listened to the entire work from start to finish I was delightfully suprised. Not only is Lightness an amazingly complete album (starting and ending with the same musical veins and progressions), it is quite overarching in its delicate way. Spanning from uptempo Suburban Kids With Biblical Names-esque vocal waverings to drawling Richard Shindel styled, strum-heavy diddies. In between these two Ray Lamontagne and Damien Rice (amongst other influences) pop in their stylistic heads occasionally, adding romantic make-out-session flair where it is most effective in making the listener achey inside. But, despite these influences, Peter and the Wolf remains entirely unique and interesting. If you're interested, I'd say buy the whole thing, but if money's tight, get "My Grey Overcoat" "The Bonsai Tree" "The Owl" "Canada" and "Safe Travels"

Love Folk? Bored with all the whiny redundant music of today? Pick this up, its unique and shows a lot of talent.

Simple

This album is simple yet beautiful. The lyrics are natural - but have a complex undertone. The recording quality suits the music throughout every song. A real gem.

Peter and the Wolf subsequently left their headquarters of Austin, TX, and took to the road, where...
