iTunes Review

With the departure of guitarists Joe Perry and Brad Whitford, Aerosmith soldiered on with its first studio album in three years. Jimmy Crespo and Rick Dufay filled in admirably, considering the shoes they were stepping into, but it’s singer Steven Tyler who holds this collection together. It’s his voice, after all, that gives Aerosmith its identity, even though it’s the band’s rhythm section of bassist Tom Hamilton and drummer Joey Kramer that ensures these songs swing. “Lightning Strikes” is the clear winner here, with a seductive rumble that gives the track a pure appeal. “Bitch’s Brew” is a close second, showing Tyler’s ability with a mid-tempo track that’s neither too hard nor too soft. The cover of “Cry Me a River” puts Tyler unexpectedly in the lounge with the boozy-woozy blues. “Joanie’s Butterfly” is a great song moving from psychedelia and experimentation to hard rock, suggesting where Aerosmith could’ve gone if it had never gotten the original band back together.

Underrated!Great ALbum!

Immensly underrated! This is a good album but nobody bothers to look at just because it doesn't have Joe or Brad, but that's the only drawback. This was the last album in Aerosmith's early era before most of their original roots were smashed. Great album!

Top 5 Aerosmith album

As good as most of their catalogue and better than many. Very underrated.

Solid

This is an interesting album. The guitar work is VERY different then Perry's, but it is good guitar work. A good solid album that holds up beyond how many butt hurt fans hate it for not having Perry.

Aerosmith were one of the most popular hard rock bands of the '70s, setting the style and sound of hard rock and heavy metal for the next two decades with their raunchy, bluesy swagger. The Boston-based quintet found the middle ground between the menace of the Rolling Stones and the campy, sleazy flamboyance of the New York Dolls, developing a lean, dirty riff-oriented boogie that was loose and swinging and as hard as a diamond. In the meantime, they developed a prototype for power ballads with...
