Holdfast comes out swinging with their debut EP! This record is full of awesome musicianship, terrific production, and most importantly, great songwriting. That is the glue that holds the rest of the album together. Without great songs, what is the point of everything else? On this record Holdfast demonstrates their ability to change things up. "Like The Sun" contains a great deal of contrasting tempos, time signatures, styles, and dynamic and timbrel effects. Their ability to go from in-your-face guitar-centric indie rock (done in a fashion that always seems to be seconds away from going out of control) to intimate, tender acoustic moments to ethereal outer-space lines is fantastic. Some have criticized this record for having a "polished" sound, and I have two things to say about that. 1)There's nothing wrong a that, as long as the polishing is both well done and is contributes to the music. Both of those criteria are exceeded here. 2)When a band as fresh and young as Holdfast begins their life in recording in such a fashion, it is a sure indicator of the wonderful things that are sure to lay on the horizon.
