iTunes Editors’ Notes

John Williams punctuated a month in Abraham Lincoln's life with the grand orchestral aplomb that’s synonymous with his life’s work. But something about Williams’ chemistry with Steven Spielberg can bring a whole package to life, and fittingly, Williams’ score for 2012’s Lincoln is no exception. Right from the opening composition, “The People’s House,” there’s a familiar emotional swell of orchestral melodies soaring with triumphant bombast. “Getting Out the Vote” cleverly incorporate old-timey fiddles and Dixieland shuffles that are indicative of Lincoln's era, but Williams adds a layer of sublime orchestration to flesh out the string-band style with more dimension. Similarly, “The Race to the House” leans heavily on sepia-toned instrumentation (more than in “Getting Out the Vote”), creating a hot and humid mood to match the pastoral patina of the old American South.

DELIVERS!

I heard a segment from "The People's House" during the trailer, and it was truly captivating. I can definitely tell why this is a top sell, but I urge listeners to preview the entire album. Even though a lot of John Williams' historical film motives and themes are heard, this is original and excitable to any film score fan not only because its written by a composing legend but because many great styles are represented: "Purpose of the AMendment" (thematic), "Getting Out the Vote" (jovial), "The American Process" (soloistic and hymnal), "The Blue and Grey" (ominous), "Freedom's Call" (folkish and haunting), "Remembering Willie" (Tearful, reverent), "Appomattox, April 9, 1865" (Choral beauty), "The Peterson House and Finale" (EPIC WILLIAMS THROWBACK). If you haven't screamed "Sold!" at the top of your lungs yet then you ought to be hyperventilating because this music is astounding and wondrous. Classic necessity for an iTunes library.

Oscar!

And the Academy Award will go to John Williams, for Lincoln. Outstanding soundtrack as always; he never disappoints.

Perfection.

If ever a soundtrack fit the movie so perfectly, I would have to say this is one for the history books. JW captured the essence of what this movie is flawlessly. If you get the chance, see the movie. Best Musical Score and Best Film of the Year hands down.
