Editors’ Notes

Soulful and self-possessed, GRAMMY®-nominated vocalist Gregory Porter delivers a refined Blue Note debut with Liquid Spirit, his third studio release. With it, Porter is able to balance the hand-clapping exuberance of mid-’60s soul-jazz vocalists (heard in covers like “Lonesome Lover” and “The ‘In’ Crowd”) with his penchant for poetic mysticism (heard in the elusive lines of the title track). Throughout the entire collection, Porter’s rich baritone is by turns insistent (“Free”) and intimate (“Water Under Bridges”), but always most rewarding when he's singing his own tasteful, imagistic lyrics, as on “Hey Laura” and “Wolfcry.” While Liquid Spirit is certainly a showcase for one of the most gifted contemporary jazz vocalists, it also presents Porter's prodigious gift as a songwriter.
